I haven’t read a book for quite some time as a friend recommended this book to me knowing I was looking for a good page turner for a recent vacation. Of course I was a bit hesitant reading the summary as I am not a sailor and seriously, who wants to read someone else’s journal?But this book and the author’s style of writing works … and it works EXCEPTIONALLY well.
This was indeed the PERFECT book for my vacation. It was riveting, inspiring, entertaining, motivating, educational, exhausting (I actually felt the crew’s frustration with the many engine challenges) and exciting as Larry achieved various milestones. I got completely lost in the book – so much so that I figuratively became part of the crew. Like many other reviewers, I couldn’t put this book down as I couldn’t wait to read what happened next and whether success would be achieved or not. (I read this in 2 days).
The author’s writing style is filled with warmth, humor, fear of the unknown, and helpful educational tidbits that you get a very strong sense for who he is as a human being especially as he intimately shares his values and new realizations about life during his journey.
For me, this book has been a big motivating metaphor to my life as it challenged me while reading it and afterwards to be introspective regarding my own life dreams and to really question what is stopping me. If Larry and his crew can spend 6 years circumnavigating the world with all of the unknowns they faced, then there should be nothing stopping my dreams either.
I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone seeking an exciting adventure that will transport you around the world!

Larry shows us the way in his book. The pictures are awesome! I have traveled to many of these places and it brought back a bazillion memories. I love the way Larry blends the adventure of his travels with the real life experiences he encounters along the way. I also enjoy the lay out of the book with a combination of ships logs, emails and personal journaling. Larry has accomplished what so many of us sit at home thinking about, his dream! May you read this accounting of one man's dream made reality and may it inspire you to bring your own dreams, even if they are small ones, to fruition. I've brought mine to reality, and now I may have to follow Larry and put them to print, even if it is just for me. Thanks for leading the way Larry!
This is a great book. It follows a man fulfilling his dream of sailing around the world. I have read numerous books on sailing, multiple survival at sea books, and found this one to be the most fun and inspirational. I didn't realize he was gay when I bought the book, and being a bit of the macho type it was a challenge for me at first but the more I read the less I cared, and found it easy to jump over any parts that made me uncomfortable. Which there really weren't many, he doesn't get into details. Thank you Larry. The adventure here is amazing though. Larry literally takes you around with world with him following his log entries and added bits of hindsight. I have almost finished it in 2 days, which is big for me. My wife and I are planning to do exactly as he has done, but avoiding the full circumference to stay away from Middle Eastern and African hostilities. However after reading this I may have to reconsider. Each chapter begins with a quote, which most of which I have been writing down and saving. I feel like a friend of Larry's and have thoroughly enjoyed his story. He has discovered the true meaning of life in his quest, and found a way to share it. I'm a very low stress/no stress kind of person, if I don't like something I change it, if I can't change it then there's no sense in worrying about it. Larry discovers this and truly lives it. I hope more people do the same as result of this book. Enjoy, highly recommended.
On a personal level, I loved this book because I too am a sailor of the open ocean. It took me back to the sea where I long to be once again. The Challenges he faced in preparation, being "out there" and returning are exactly what I am facing in the moment as I write this review.
On a global level, a level which speaks to all of us Humans, no matter what our race, gender, political views or sexual orientation are...we can relate to the story of a fellow human who is driven by what he or she is Passionate about in Life. We all have Dreams of what our like would be like if things were different. Larry Jacobson, through the telling of his true life adventure upon the sea, has given us a glimpse into a world where a fellow human dreamed a big dream as a child. A child who did not have the means to fulfill the dream at the time and over the course of 30 years or so, through facing all the walls before him, kept on going to make his dream come true. He did not quit. He did not let others tell him what to do. If someone told him he was crazy or stupid, he did not listen to the others...he listened to his Inner Voice and kept going. It took work, hard work, as all our Dreams will take, and he did it...he made his dream come true.
Even if you are not a sailor, the book will inspire you to think about your own individual Passion while images of far off lands are generated in your mind.
I gave the book five stars because it has inspired me to keep going. I know what my Passion is...Adventure...and I will keep working on getting back to the sea once again and this time will sail around the world alone (well not totally, this time when I take to the sea, I will have my dog with me )). A Dream of mine since I was a child.
Larry has written a phenomenal book on life, relationships, letting go, living your dreams...and sailing. A beautifully written book. Some chapters made me want to join him and others made me want to swear off boats forever. If you have always wanted to sail away from life as you know it, read this book. Larry took great pains to chronicle his life during this year plus that he was mostly at sea, in a journal and in emails. That made the re-telling of the story so much more compelling than if he had tried to simply remember everything when he sat down to write. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes a good adventure!
